The Mary J Teacher Scholarship Fund

The Mary J Africa Teachers scholarships is a special venture that was put together in 2020 to celebrate, nurture and support Africa’s Teachers efforts towards professional growth. It is birthed out of a commitment by EduHubAfric Founder, to paying forward: Without the scholarship that she received through the commonwealth scholarship commission (CSC), it would have been near impossible for her to pursue & attain her PhD in mathematics education.

In addition, it is inspired by the heart to heart relationship that we seek to cultivate with Africa’s teachers and also the teaching experience of –Mary J’s (our founder’s mother, a retired teacher & one of Africa’ best teachers) journey as a teacher. Through contributions from EduHubAfric & fund raising from within our network, our goal is to offer different forms of scholarships to teachers and their children. Our first cohort of 4 teacher scholars, are drawn from Rwanda: The selection of these 4 is birthed out of an understanding that in many of Africa’s countries, a significant number of teachers are considered not to have attained the full qualifications for teaching (e.g a BeD degree).

While these teachers carry most of Africa’s countries teaching burden, their pay is usually at a considerably lower scale due the supposed under qualification. The very low salaries, sometimes less than $100 coupled with high tuition fees required to upgrade to the expected qualification results into a ‘poverty trap’ for these group of African teachers’ a majority of whom are very passionate female teachers. As captured in the excerpt feedback from one of the first scholarship awardees, an upgrade in the teachers’ qualifications through the Mary J Teacher Scholarships provide a window for an upgrade in the teachers’ salaries & teaching responsibilities by the individual African Governments sometimes by over 100%. As such, the scholarships provide an opportunity for these teachers to break out of the economic poverty, expand their knowledge/skills for teaching and keep doing what they enjoy doing-teaching!

Mary J Teacher Scholarship Awardee (2020)-Rwanda
"The Mary J Scholarship has helped me to resume my studies after 7 years of suspension of my studies. I had very little hope to complete my bachelor’s degree. Thanks to the scholarship, now I am student at an international University. After completing my bachelor’s degree, many more doors will be opened to me: Today I am exclusively a teacher at only one level (ordinary level) but through the Mary J Scholarships I will be a holder of a degree, proving my knowledge & abilities to teach at all secondary levels, to lead institutions, to compete with other on job market without a barrier of level of education."

"Future You" Scholarships

"Future You" Scholarships student dancing
Through the ‘Future You’ student sponsorship program, we seek to identify young professionals to not only sponsor needy students but also invest time in a long-term relationship that allows them to mentor and share key lessons and inspirations from their own life with the young ones. The sponsorship is therefore not just in form of monetary scholarship for individual students but also sponsoring and participating in key learning events for and with the students. The key goal is contributing an improved ‘future versions’ of ourselves. Our first cohort of ‘Future You’ beneficiaries are from a community school in Kisumu Kenya-Grace of Marietta: Up to 6 pupils are benefiting from tuition scholarships and the school population has also benefited from a school library that we fundraised for.
